“Better Late than Never”

December 17, 2009 by Dave

Our alarm clock was set for 6:30 am this morning.  Not too early, not too late.  Unless you consider that, before 7:00 am, the following must take place within 30 minutes:

          • Multiple attempts at waking up the kids (average 2.3 per morning)
          • Make breakfast for the kids
          • Coffee break (requirement regardless of what time the alarm goes off)
          • Make lunches for our two older kids
          • Dad’s favorite – Kat’s “mandatory” 15-minute review and follow-up of e-mails that took place between 11 pm and 6:30 am.  (seriously, can’t this wait until the kids are out the door?!)
  • Review of school folders
  • Mad scramble to find school clothes – which are usually folded, in baskets, but not put away. (putting away is mom’s job fyi)
  • Moms’ favorite – Dad yelling about being late, wondering why the alarm was set for 6:30 with all that has to happen this morning, asking why he needs to ask each kid 5 times why their shoes aren’t on (or, better yet, where their shoes are)

Same thing at night – why would we start the “bedtime process” at 7:45 pm, knowing full well that we can’t complete the toothbrushing, pajama-putting, storytelling, drink-negotiating, bed-choosing, and book reading by their 8:00 pm bedtime?  The next thing you know it’s nearly 9 pm, no one’s sleeping, I’m yelling again, and Kat’s ready for bed.  Nothing says “romance” like a snoring wife on the couch.

Oh, and Kat’s answer to setting the alarm for 6:30?  “I was desperate for an extra 15 minutes of sleep.”  Perhaps going to bed 15 minutes earlier would help, but I guess she couldn’t survive without seeing the e-mails sent between 10:45 and 11:00…
