Like Father, Like (Grand)son

January 21, 2010 by

Kat went out of town last weekend for the first of her 19 girls’ weekends in 2010.  Fortunately for me and the kids, my dad and uncle decided to drive down to a) give me some company for the weekend and b) help out with kids on Monday (no school due to the holiday).

It was eye-opening to see how similar my dad (who’s 58) and our middle boy (who’s 3)  are on so many different levels.  For example:

  • Both take a dead sprint to the bathroom first thing in the morning
  • Both have very few skills with the Wii, but have more fun than anyone (NOTE – he left on Monday morning, and by that night he had already bought Mario Kart, and was “practicing” at home.  Classic.)
  • Both have a nearly unhealthy obsession with sweets
  • Both get rather cranky when hungry (Dad will never get used to our later-than-normal dinner schedule)
  • Both are completely wiped out and ready for bed by 7 pm
  • Both missed Gram terribly (that should earn me some points back home)

I’m not sure how a person changes from a “hands-off” dad to a completely hands-on, not-a-care-in-the-world, take-on-whatever-I-face, “sure, I’ll change that poop” grandfather.  He wears a shirt that says “Grandparents are parents without rules.”  I think that cliche is half-right – I doubt the kids have any rules when Grandpa rules the roost.  But somehow, he makes it work.  And we’re a better family because of it.

Thanks Dad.
