She Said: Part 2 ~ “Luck is What Happens When Preparation Meets Opportunity.” – Seneca

July 1, 2010 by Kat

So where was I…. Oh, so the Bodyguard says no way. Gosh, too much to write — and not in the mood.

I decided to tell you in oral word, vs. written (feel like ALL I do for work is type!) about what happens next.

(Eww… just watched the video… what’s up with the extra skin rolls under my pits? Eckt! Also, sorry for not straightening up for you guys… it’s “the new me”. Not sweating the small stuff!)

So, again, everyone on line is asking me “What time did you get here this morning — Wow, you have a VIP bracelet?” I’m all: “Oh, it’s such a blur; I can not remember… you?”

Next thing you know, people start trying to cut in line right in front of me (I’m next up). I bite my tongue for a while, but then realize it was “HOW” they were feeling entitled to be in front of all of the people standing there for an hour — there are no manners involved, no pleases, no thank you’s. Just plain rude. I speak up… I then realize that I have NO RIGHT to complain… I mean, seriously, Kat?

Anywho, we get in a scuffle (which, for me, is RIDIC, as I’m a WIMP when it comes to confrontations). My “new friends” behind me in line (the ones I just lied to about “not remembering what time I got in line”) are whispering to me, “I wouldn’t even say anything… Let them bury themselves… the staff is going to hear them, and see they just cut all of us…“.
Okay, so they then open the ropes — time to go into the tents for the “Audition”. My “new friends” start saying, “Wait, those people CUT this girl (me) — SHE should go next… this is not fair”. I’m all “No, no, it’s okay; really… let them go“. One guy shouts out, “We’re all here to support one another, not bring each other down… let’s not argue“. Okay, how gay.

Anywho, so the 2 groups who were just arguing about cutting (me included) get placed in a tent together. Murphy’s Law.

There are 16 people, and the casting director (who seems in her late 20s) tells us the scoop. Meanwhile, we’re all thinking, “So, our destiny is in the hands of this ONE (1) person, this 20-something???” What ever happened to checks and balances?

She says:

  • You have 30 seconds to tell us: Who you are, what your show idea is, and why you’d make the best host
  • Hand me your 16 page application and start right away. Don’t wait for me to look at you; I can multi-task

When each contestant is speaking, when I tell you she is looking ALL over the place, pretty much, except for AT the person speaking, I’m not kidding. Sometimes she seemed interested, other times she seemed to be  people watching the crowd behind us.  Don’t get me wrong, she was nice as can be… but you could tell she ALREADY KNEW WHAT SHE WAS LOOKING FOR within the first breath you take. Ridic.

Does she take notes?

NOPE.

Does she seem interested?

NOPE.

What happens when everyone’s done? She says, “Thanks a lot. You’ll be hearing from us.”

I felt decent about it… I had it well manicured and felt I had nailed it best I could. What helped was the support of the others saying, “Oh, you soooo made it“. I’m my worst critic, of course, so blew them off.
Okay — here’s what becomes key / a foreshadow — she says, “If you submitted an online video, please write that in the top, right hand corner; VERY IMPORTANT”.

Well, I did (my videographer did) submit a video — so of course I wrote that. She didn’t say, “If you submitted it and it’s FOR SURE LIVE ON THE Oprah site, write it down.

Because if that were the case, I would not have written it. Why? You’ll read later.

Ironically, I’d say 80% of the people there did NOT do an online video. It became my, and the others’, assumption that the ‘call backs’ for the
next day were for those folks who DID NOT put a 3 minute, recorded audition up live on the Oprah site. The call backs for the next day were described as an “on air audition”.

Since you can’t really judge ANYTHING in a 30 seconds… and they’d already be able to see the video auditions of those who submitted it to the “OWN” (Oprah Winfrey Network) site, they seemed to be calling back those who just showed up for the Casting Call, didn’t have a live video (which I had, or so I thought), but of whom they wanted to see more.

Yes, guys… there is a PART 3. Why? Because the Saga takes twists and turns that would just way make you all suffer reading it in just this Part 2 post. Sorry. It’ll be up tomorrow. Cool?

Yes, that would have been helpful to know that. No biggy… I could tell it wasn’t just “Me” they were disenchanted with. Miss you too! At least I gave you the ‘net net’ on the full scoop via text… but I’ll type in the full version tonight (hopefully!). Hugs!

Pressure? Ha. You’re correct that the post is way overdue. (Just noticed I wrote “Part 3 will be tomorrow”… OOPS!) However, I can’t wait to find out who you are (have a sneaking suspicion — lucky you), b/c the pressure from the kids while I’m was trying to work this past week w/them all home… makes working for Oprah sound like a freaking breeze.
