He Said: “Right on the Money”

August 3, 2010 by Dave

In the Fotheringham house, there are 3 items of contention that we continually encounter.  If you read this blog, two of these should not be new to you:

  • Being on time.  Her issues, not mine.
  • Spending habits.  Her habits, not mine.
  • How much of our ‘personal info’ we share on this site.  Hers AND mine, unfortunately for me.

The 3rd one is a hot topic for me, and I originally refused to write this post.  There’s a fine line (as some of the past comments have pointed out) between a fun site and TMI.  Take zit-picking, or my numerous failed attempts at romance with my spouse, as examples.  I don’t want our dirty laundry posted on this site!  (this was NOT one of Kat’s better nights, as you can see)

But talking about finances?  On our site?  In front of our tens of readers?  No way.  But then I got to thinking….

It’s not like we’re drastically in debt.  We’ve never missed a payment (except for the gas bill in the middle of winter, but that was an accident).  And, if we do the right things, maybe we will put us in a better financial situation MUCH faster than we would have on our own.

But if she is willing to tell the world that we’re “trying” FPU, then I’m going to take this opportunity as well:

  • Stop buying things – the intent of selling items is to pay down debt, not to buy other stuff!
  • If you do buy something, please tell me what part of the budget it’s going to pull from.  I can’t grow money, as hard as I’ve tried.

Simple requests, no?  All kidding and finger-pointing aside, the budget has been a GREAT exercise for us.  A much better handle on where our money ends up, and we have a much better idea of where we need to focus our efforts.

So I gave into Kat’s desire to blog about our financials.  I’ll have to draw the line on providing any details around my mistress, the events of June 13, 1989, or her obsession with the color green.   You’ll just have to sit back and wonder…

I think my husband I need to make a budget and stick to it. We seem to have different priorities when it comes to spending money. Me? totally need a new pair of shoes. Him? Totally thinks he needs a new mountain bike or new pair of skis.

duh- everyone knows you don’t NEED a bike or skis. Shoes are a necessity.

  2. I say good for you! It would drive me nuts if I was the one trying to save and my husband was spending! Money is such a tough issue. My husband doesn’t like me sharing about our finances either on my blog..lol I guess it’s a guy thing. As a woman I figure if you don’t like it and are embarrassed change it! lol It is what it is so why not share:) I’m glad you did.

Please explain why you have a picture of a small naked child on your site?

This must have been hard to talk about, but it is so topical for this site! I can’t think of a more ubiquitous issue among couples. Thanks for sharing, although I was fully expecting some Bachelorette commentary this morning.

  5. You’re very similar to my husband!! He’s in charge of finances (because I suck at it), and whenever I want to purchase something, I always have to tell him what part of our budget it has to come out of.

It’s a pain in the ass, and my mind kinda wanders when he talks about money, but it really has helped us…um… me. haha
