Seriously? “Get Over It” – Featured Blogger at Theta Mom Today

August 27, 2010 by Kat

I have a sneaking suspicion that I’ve fooled most everyone. The perception just might be (which is NOT, in my case, reality) that I have it all together. Four kids, a bustling business, and a He Said/She Said Blog with the hubs. I’m lucky enough to also be married to this same guy: my soul mate. At one of the most huge conferences for social media and blogging 3 weeks ago, I can not even count on two hands the number times I got the and your husband BLOGS WITH YOU? I can’t even get mine to READ my blog!”.  Hubs claims it’s because he gets to call me out in a public forum with no recourse. He loves Today’s Cliche because he can nail me on all of my idiosyncrasies for which there are no words; in fact, often he actually gets my peeps (mainly girls) to side with him. The nerve!

On Today’s Cliche, it has likely become apparent that I’m simply just a spaz at heart.  I’m the one who makes lists upon lists upon lists upon lists; for myself, the sitter, my husband, and my kids. I don’t miss one detail. Ironically, as the car heaves away with my family of six in tow… (picture the most obscene caricature drawing in your head right now) and we are a good hour from home I scream: “AHHHHHH! I FORGOT the … (you name it: drivers license, the ticket, the BABY!).”

I focus on all of the wrong things: the things for which I can not control. Whether it’s that I what I desperately want from Overstock.com is going to sell out before I save enough cash to buy it (we’re on a serious debt diet – it stinks). Or, that I grow pimples worrying about where my kindergartner will go to for Middle School. Or, I obsess over calculating if my roots will be grown out from the overpriced salon appointment I just had — exposing all of my gray follicles — by the time Bloggy Boot Camp in Philly rolls around. Another constant worry: if I’m going to offend anyone in my posts. I need to get over all of those things. Again, I focus on the wrong things: those of which I can’t control.

I check my work email, my play email, my blog, and twitter first thing in the morning before changing the kids’ diapers, making them breakfast, or feeding the dog. Shame, shame. When it comes to my online community, my priorities for my family are completely screwed up. If I had to choose between my husband or being without my Apple MacBook for one year, I don’t know which I’d choose.

Please tell me you can relate. Misery LOVES company (although I am FAR from miserable today! Heck, my KIDS ALL WENT BACK TO SCHOOL THIS MORNING. The MOST WONDERFUL time — and DAY — of the Year)!!

I need to get to know more imperfect women so I don’t feel like such a failure, some days.

Kat was the Featured Blogger at Theta Mom today; the above was her post as the Featured Blogger over there.  Kat & Heather, of Theta Mom, have been blogging buds for several months and they finally got to meet IRL (for those non bloggers: “In Real Life” at BlogHer in NYC 3 weeks ago.

Haha! This imperfect woman can definitely relate to you! As I write this, my toddler is eating apples (good healthy breakfast option) and a pop tart (not a good healthy option) in her high chair watching tv so I can steal some quiet time on the computer. And no I haven’t changed her diaper yet! (She poops in the morning so I know as soon as I change her she will poop. I’m waiting her out.)
I love this blog and will definitely be following!!

Congratulations on the TMC featured blogger of the week!

I’m relatively new to the blogging scene. I have been following Thetamom for a few months. I think the TMC is one of the best collection of great bloggers around and I hope to (hopefully) join you in the future (as long as I continue to make strides in my blogging aspirations!)

But for now, consider me a new follower!

  5. Hello! I’m visiting from TMC to wish you congrats on being featured this week! Your blog is brilliant. There are so many times where I am discussing a topic with the Hubs and I am tempted to shove the laptop onto his lap because he has more than enough material that he could contribute! I can’t wait to hear more from you! Have an awesome Friday & weekend :)

(whoo hoo for school starting today!!)

Are you sure we weren’t separated at birth? I do the EXACT same things and it drives my husband CRAZY. He lives in the now…I live in the what ifs, and disaster scenarios that I can create in my overactive imagination. I plan my menu out for the week…breakfast, lunch and dinner…and I used to plan my wardrobe out for the week when I was working outside the home.

I think we need to set up a support group!

Serious question: who do you think has the perception you have it all together?

You didn’t have your application for Oprah. You didn’t get to the audition on time. You didn’t get your video uploaded. You didn’t bring your business cards to blogwhatever. You’ve broken your watering system twice. You had to hire someone to help you ORGANIZE YOUR PANTRY. You had to have someone tell you how to eat healthy. You have had to get outside advice to help manage your debt. You are late for things because you spend too much time at wal*mart.

believe me, no one has that perception.

  9. OH EM GEE!!! I am head over heels in love with your blog! Heather couldn’t have picked a better feature today :)

Trust me…. people in my life think ‘She’s just got it ALL together’ HAHA! I have NOTHING together. I stumble through life, through parenting, through cooking… I straight up stumble through it all. But it’s the best fall of my life, because it’s falling right in love with my life.

I’m a new follower and look forward in all the future reading!

What a cool site and unique concept you have going on here! Really looking forward to reading your stuff. And guess what? Really looking forward to MEETING you at Bloggy Bootcamp in Philly in a couple of weeks!

As for feeling like you’re not quite cutting on the mom/employee/wife/EVERYTHING front, oh honey, you’re going to have to get in line to join that club. ;-) If it makes you feel any better, here’s an account of when I was having one of those moments myself:

Kat, you are amazing. You’re human and that’s only ONE of the things I love about you. It’s apparent that most people do. And those who don’t? Go away.

You’ve never professed to be anything other than YOU. It’s refreshing. And you put yourself out there all the time as yourself, flaws and all. Never do you hide behind an obscure moniker or an anonymous post-as some do. You’re out there–for better or worse–and that’s to be applauded in this world of people so quick to tear others down.

It’s awesome that your husband contributes to your blog. Maybe mine will one day. Pipe dream? Perhaps.

Congrats on the TMC feature! So now you see you’re not alone – plenty of imperfect and control freak mothers here! LOL. I check my email/blog/Twitter and Facebook before changing my Little Miss’ diaper in the morning too – she poops everytime I put a fresh one on her so I’d rather wait it out. ;)

I don’t even try to pretend I have it all together! And personally, don’t like the people that “front” that they do. I like to put it out there w all my friends that this is THE hardest job in the World and if you act like it isn’t, well you can’t be human!

Also, when I get up in the morning, I put out my 3 yr old’s breakfast, put my 4 mos old on her play mat and proceed to my computer where I check, in order, usmagazine.com, people.com (just in case I missed a scoop!), tmz.com (bc they have trashier headlines), facebook, then the weather and if I feel really clueless that week, CNN! And of course, whenever I get a new email from todays cliche, I ALWAYS check it bc it makes me laugh and what a better way to start your day than reading a hysterical rant from Kat:)

  16. Congratulations on your feature at TMC! What a great concept for your blog, I can’t wait to dig in:) I’m right there with you…love waking up, having my coffee, and checking my blog e-mails, comments, tweets before having to do the mad morning dash…I don’t see a problem with that;) Oh, and I go through withdrawls whenever we take a weekend “off” and I’m without the computer!
Don’t worry, you’re not alone on the “imperfect Mama” front…I’m learning as I go around here.

  17. Congrats on your Theta Mom post!! And I am TOTALLY like this as well. I make list after list after list {I even started a tumblr blog dedicated to just making lists. I’m crazy.} and yet still can’t figure out how to manage my life, my family and stay sane. You’re not alone.

  18. Congratulations Beautiful! Well deserved! Glad to know I’m not alone, focusing on all the wrong things sometimes…oh, to be a mother! We don’t have to pretend, we have to be real. Thanks for being so sincere in your posts, it’s what keeps me coming back for more.

Congrats! on the feature. I’m new to ThetaMom and checked out the featured blogger.

I’m sorry, but no mom is the perfect mom. We all do our best and being human screw up sometimes. The best part is God usually gives us kids that understand our short comings.

    Blessings
