He Said: “It’s Bittersweet”

September 15, 2010 by Dave

Now I know how Trent Dilfer felt when he played for the Ravens during their (ONLY) championship season – just jump on the back of your team’s strength and ride it to victory!  I’m not sure if there were 10, one hundred, or a thousand-plus entries.  What I do know is that somehow, some way, my wife was able to carry us to the final two of the Pyrex competition.

Next week should be interesting, to say the least.  Who is our competition?  (We know who they are, but don’t “know” them.)  Am I taller than the other guy? (I hope.)  Does he have better hair?  (Duh.)  Will Kat somehow throw the girl off her game by asking her a million questions moments before the cook-off? (Again, I hope.)  Will someone call their hotel room every 30 minutes through the night to ensure they don’t get a good night’s sleep? (I doubt it, but desperate times call for desperate measures.)  Are they better public speakers than we are, or perhaps more importantly, better in the kitchen? (Who knows, but we’ll find out in a week.)

Win or lose, this has been an absolute blast – even with all of the razzing I’ve received taken into consideration.  I was bribed into changing my fantasy football team name in return for votes (my team is now the “Shoe Chefs,” for those of you who watched our video, and my team is absolutely awful as a side note), and I have a few new nicknames from the group:

  • Betty Crocker (very original)
  • Little Debbie (kind of ironic, as my mother’s name is Debbie)
  • Bobby Gay (decent play off of my favorite Food Network chef)
  • Dave Schneider (ouch)

With friends like you…

Finally, I want to give a few shout-outs regarding this process.

  • Thanks first to everyone who voted.  We obviously wouldn’t be heading to NY without the support of our friends and family – and apparently, their friends and family as well.
  • Special thanks to my mom and dad, who are juggling their schedules and canceling plans to watch the kids while we’re away next week.  You’re the best – thanks so much for helping out!
  • I also want to give a special shout-out to mom, but I need to share a short story with you to do so.  If you recall, NBC came to our house to interview us after making it to the Top 10. My mom was beyond obsessed, even though it was only a local affiliate.  Her son on TV – how exciting!!  So the guy comes and conducts the interview, and about an hour later my mom calls to ask about “the shoot.”  I tell her in a straight voice, “Mom, it was absolutely incredible – MATT LAUER WAS IN OUR KITCHEN!!”  I could swear she peed herself from screaming so loud.  Unreal.  After I told the truth, we laughed for 10 minutes about how gullible she can be.  To this day, I continue to push the envelope as to what story I can tell and what she’ll believe.  Maybe someday she will finally pick up on it.  (Nah, who am I kidding?!?!)

What will next week bring?  Stay tuned…at the very least, one of us will end up doing something worthy of a blog post!

Dude, I think a better NFL player you should relate to now would be Kordell Stewart.
