He Said: “Sometimes Life Throws you a Curve…”

September 29, 2010 by Dave

Sometimes life throws you a curve.  Out of all of the cliches we’ve used in the past on this webiste, no other cliche falls more in line with its actual topic than this one.

I have to be honest, and say that I was confident going into Friday morning’s finals of Pyrex’s Hottest Culinary Couple in America cooking competition, for a number of reasons:

  • Kat and I knew the recipe we were making frontwards and backwards.  We practiced it twice, and had it down pat.  I’m going to withhold the fact that I nearly severed my thumb during the first practice run.
  • Our interaction during the media session was fantastic, which (I think and hope) showed our true colors and our compatibility to the Pyrex group.
  • We got GREAT rest Thursday night, even after a steak dinner and a few after-dinner drinks (and maybe some other stuff back in the hotel room that I can’t detail here – boomchickabowow).
  • Perfect breakfast in the morning (The W served up what may be the best pancakes I’ve ever tasted).

So leading up to the competition at 11:30 in the morning, what could possibly go wrong?  What if you were 100% reliant upon stove-top burners for your entire meal, and you find out more than halfway through the 30 minutes that a circuit blew on YOUR stove-top (and maybe more importantly, NOT your opponents’)?!?!

We could have practiced our meal 1,500 times, and could not have prepared for the “real thing” and how we’d have to deal with adversity.  Honestly, if you asked 100 people who know us “if Dave & Kat were in a cooking competition and their burners died, which one would freak out first?” I can almost promise you that 50 would say me and the other 50 would say Kat, split right down the middle.  Fortunately, we both kept our cool in the midst of the pressure.

When power was restored, we were allowed to finish the final piece of our preparation – I guess the judges would be OK eating raw veggies, but they definitely felt differently about an uncooked egg.  With a little extra “injury time” we plated our dishes and served them to the judges.  Needless to say, as the other couple was dancing in their ‘kitchen’ next to us, I thought we were toast (bad pun, I know).  As we finished, Kat and I looked at each other, and our reaction was pretty darn cool.  We both kind of shrugged our shoulders, kissed and said “We tried our best.  Let’s see what happens.”

Once again, my wife’s reaction to a surprise was priceless.  There was what seemed like a 5-second delay after they announced the winners (WOOHOO!!), then I found my wife wrapped around me, screaming in my ear.  I have to think that us keeping our cool, just by itself, may have helped us win the competition.  I’m sure that as we film the next 4 videos for Pyrex, we’ll run into more obstacles, although none of them can be quite as challenging as the burners.  Part of me thinks that they did it on purpose, just to see how this crazy couple would react to a challenge!  Hmmm…

I do want to give a shout-out to Liz and Nick - the other finalist couple that joined us in New York.  Part of me wishes that they weren’t as nice and sweet as they were, so that beating them would have been more enjoyable.  Their meal looked delicious and I could have easily pictured them with the chef’s hats in our place.  They did a great job, and represented EVERYTHING that Pyrex was looking for.

And, just to get it out of the way, I’m NOT going to give Kat the privilege of gawking over the guest judge – Gilles Marini – and discussing how the girls melted in his presence.  It was almost comical to watch the girls fan themselves from all the “heat,” then walk away like they just high-fived Brett Favre or something.  I mean, come on!!

(OK, I have to admit – I think I have my first-ever bromance!  I only hope it can be reciprocated…)
